Rudy, featured pet

Rudy is a 4½ year old, male neutered lab cross. He came to see the doctors at Aztec Animal Clinic on June 26th because he had lost his appetite and was vomiting. His owner discovered that he had eaten about half of a bottle of the product, Gorilla Glue. Gorilla Glue is an expanding glue that is activated by moisture. Once activated, the product expands to approximately 3-5 times its initial volume, conforms to the surrounding area and then becomes firm.

The glue, post-surgery

Rudy was x-rayed on June 26th and we found a large mass of foreign material in his stomach. Given his recent glue ingestion, we suspected that Rudy's stomach was full of Gorilla Glue. Once the glue hardens, the only way to remove it from the stomach is surgically. Rudy was started on IV fluids and preoperative blood work was taken in preparation for surgery. On June 27th, Rudy was re-x-rayed to confirm that the mass was still in his stomach and then underwent a gastrotomy procedure at Aztec Animal Clinic. In this procedure, an incision is made into the abdomen, the stomach is isolated and an incision is then made into the stomach. The mass of Gorilla Glue was removed through the incision in the stomach. Rudy's stomach was very irritated where the Gorilla Glue had adhered to the wall. The stomach is a very resilient organ, however, and heals quickly! Rudy did very well in surgery and recovered quickly from anesthesia. The doctors at Aztec Animal Clinic administered IV fluids, pain medications, antibiotics and stomach protectants to aid in Rudy's recovery. Within a few hours of recovery, Rudy was walking and seemed relieved to have an empty stomach! Rudy stayed overnight following his surgery and began eating a bland diet the next morning. He felt great!

Rudy went home on June 28th with pain medications and stomach protectants. He continued a bland diet for 3-5 days postoperatively. He continued to do well recovering at home. Rudy came into Aztec Animal Clinic on July 11th for a 2 week postoperative recheck. He was lively, eating well and his abdominal incision was completely healed. Rudy had made a complete recovery from his Gorilla Glue ingestion! He promises to never eat Gorilla Glue again.
